Introduction

Corruption is perhaps the biggest problem that the world of sports is facing in today's world. Thus this topic was chosen for the report. This report will be containing information about corruption in various forms and the different preventions and precautions to protect sports all over the world.

Forms of Corruptions

The most prominent form of corruption in sports is bribery. The main forms of bribes are gifts, favors, tips, discounts, funding, improved contracts, fundraisers, donations etc. Referees are often offered money in order to ensure a favorable result in a tough competition (Lewis, 2000). Also often bribes are offered to the sportsmen themselves in order to reduce their performance and let their opponents win (Morris, 1991). Last, tampering of game elements can be done by bribing. the most common example being over-feeding a horse just before a race by the groom or even doping the horse so that it cannot perform to its fullest ability and in turn profit some businessman who had a heavy bet on some other horse.

History

Nowadays we see cases of corruption in sports more often than in the old days. Giving some of the most famous examples, the referees were fixed with the help of gifts in the Winter Olympic Games of 2002 ice dancing event, when the French judge cast his vote for the skaters of Russia and secured the French skating team a distinct advantage. The most well- known example of sportsmen being paid to underperform was the Black Box Scandal in 1919. In recent times, Sreesanth was banned lifetime from cricket for fixing matches in the Indian Premier League where the bowler performed poorly and conceded more than 14 runs in an over intentionally.

Causes

The main cause of corruption in sports is the ever-increasing greed of human nature.  All players and officials as well as the sponsors are rewarded more than they deserve for their services. However, the more they get, the more they want. Another cause is that the big people pay huge money in gambling about which team will win, so they try to do anything just to make their team win. Yet another cause is that all like for their team to be the winner.  Finally, big money in sports can be the root of corruption. This has been causing all the corruption that has been going on in today's world of sports.

Solutions

Many organizations like the International Olympic Community have been tackling financial corruption. Great steps have been taken by World Anti-Doping Agency in order to address the serious problem of drug usage (Senior, 2006). These organizations have been trying to eradicate corruption in all its forms for quite some time now. But still corruption prevails. Nowadays a new solution to this issue has been coming up in the past few days, namely market-driven morality. This in simpler terms means the involvement of sponsors and other partners in fighting against corruption by using the financial power they have. The most alarming concern for the sponsors is that the tarnished image of a corrupt sport can and will be passed on to the sponsors attached and the consumers will in turn be boycotting the sponsor's products or services, thereby resulting in huge losses. The relationship between sports and sponsors is fast-changing and will be like never before. This can indeed be a huge positive step towards a corruption-free world of sports. The irony of the fact is that many claim the big money in sports to be the root of corruption. However this root might actually turn out to be the solution of the problem too if the sponsors eliminate corruption with their financial strength.

Moreover, another solution is that the councils of sports add some stricter laws regarding corruption, bribery and match-fixing and set good examples by giving strict punishments to offenders. Recently the lifetime ban for Sreesanth served as a good example and will perhaps warn others from doing such actions. Stricter laws should be formed as soon as possible and those found guilty must be dealt with strictly both by the council of the related sport as well as the law. Governments must unite with the sport bodies and work together towards a corruption-free sports world

Conclusion

In this report, we come across a variety of new policies that have been and can be adopted against the corruption happening in today's world of sports. Sports are the best thing that has ever happened to mankind. We cannot let corruption eat away into this. Let's work together against corruption and save the spirit in which the game must be played.
